Thick Skin?

"You are the best kind of wife, the kind that can't talk." Few weeks ago, I did some volunteering. I met some new people. One friendly gal asks me if I’ve learned to have a thick skin because of this. I asked what she meant. (She didn’t know sign but could read lips. Typically, I don’t mouth everything especially when I’m tired. However, if they lip read, I try to.) She gave the example of someone saying, “you sure are quit”.  They would be joking of course. And I said oh yeah no that wouldn't bother me. But I thought later. It depends. It depends on who, where, when. People are so thoughtless. Yes, it’s annoying.

Other people I met were young people and honestly, they were awkward and nervous with me but after a bit they relaxed. Was I bothered by their behavior? No, they didn’t know.

I do hate when people joke with my husband that he must love that I can’t talk now. My husband hates it too. It amazes me how many times we’ve heard that. And they say it like they are so funny the first to come up with it, wanting us to laugh with them. We sadly disappoint. And like I've mentioned before when they hear that I am mute and, they say, 'oh that's okay too." giving me permission to be mute, no, not okay, no thick skin for that one. But most of how people act is because they just don’t know how to act, so they act thoughtless and foolish. But yes, I roll my eyes.
